Our balloons float 12–13 km up, right in the level of the jet streams. Spin the globe to see the winds at that height and how the SQ9GOL flight rode them around the planet. Drag to rotate, scroll to zoom, move the slider to go from yesterday's analysis to the 2-day forecast.

Balloon vs model at its last position

Wind: GFS model at 200 hPa (about 11.8 km) on a 7.5° grid from Open-Meteo, drawn as moving streamlines where it blows faster than 60 km/h. The balloon track is drawn from its GPS fixes; gaps are nights when the solar tracker sleeps. The speed comparison uses the last two fixes and the model time step closest to them. For a full flight-long comparison see the wind check in the propagation lab.
